Service, Not Servitude
True service benefits all parties involved because, when we serve others, we serve ourselves. This means providing whatever service you provide with a legitimate desire to do so and not because you have been convinced that you should. For example, many people go to work every day and do whatever it is that they do because they feel they have to, not because they truly want to. When this occurs, the person is acting more out of servitude than service.
On the other hand, if that person went to work every day to do something he or she truly wanted to do, not only would the customers benefit and the service be of a higher quality, the worker him or herself would gain in deeply enriching ways that go far beyond simply receiving a paycheck.
Try to find ways to serve people in your life. It doesn’t have to be anything monumental, just be sure to choose something you will enjoy doing. I know you’ll be very glad you did.
In service,
J.H.
